Colorful Drugstore Eye Makeup Tutorial
Today’s post is sponsored by Target.
It’s easy to get stuck in a makeup rut. Even though I own eye shadows in every color of the rainbow, I tend to use the same neutral shades over and over again. This month, Target challenged me to create two makeup looks inspired by the color wheel, and I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone. Today, I’m sharing two eye-makeup tutorials to show you how to work a dose of color into your holiday look!
Look #1: Orange + Red + Copper
For my first look inspired by the color wheel, I chose the analogous colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel) of orange, red, and copper. This warm combination of colors reminds me of autumn leaves, and the finished eye look is colorful without being over the top. I’m thinking about pairing this colorful eye makeup with a cozy sweater, plaid skirt, tights, and boots on Thanksgiving Day!
How to Recreate This Look:
Before you begin applying your colorful eye shadows, it’s important to prep your eyes with a cream eye shadow. I used the Maybelline Color Tattoo Leather 24HR Cream Gel Eye Shadow in Creamy Beige to keep the look subtle, but you can use any color you’d like. The cream eye shadow will leave a slightly tacky surface on your eyelid to make your eye shadow show up true to color.
I used the e.l.f. 100-Piece Eye Shadow Palette for both eye shadow looks. You can reference this photo to see which shades I used for each step.
Step One (not pictured): After applying your cream eye shadow, use a flat eye-shadow brush to apply an eye shadow similar to your natural skin tone across your entire eyelid.
Step Two: Next, apply a terra-cotta orange eye shadow to the crease and outer third of your eyelid, and use a fluffy eye-shadow brush or your finger to gently diffuse the color.
Step Three: Mix a deep brownish-red eye shadow and a warm wine eye shadow together, and apply it to the outer third of your eyelid to define your eye.
Step Four: To create a bold metallic accent to this look, use a damp eye-shadow brush to pat a metallic copper shade to the inner third of your eyelid. The water amps up the metallic properties of the eye shadow to create a foiled look.
Step Five: To complete the look, add winged black liner to your top lash line along with a coat of mascara and false eyelashes. For a subtle smoky effect, smudge the Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen in Bronze Beam onto your lower lash line.
Look #2: Purple + Yellow Gold
My second colorful eye-shadow look combines complementary colors (colors across from each other on the color wheel) to create a bright and bold look. I wouldn’t normally think to pair yellow and purple, but I love how the warm yellow-gold eye shadow makes the bright purple eye shadow pop! I wore this bright look with the grey sweater pictured above, and I received so many compliments on my makeup throughout the day!
How to Recreate This Look:
You can reference this photo to see which shades from the e.l.f. 100-Piece Eye Shadow Palette I used for each step.
Step One: After applying a neutral cream eye shadow, use a flat eye-shadow brush to pat a pale lilac shade across your eyelid. Step Two: Use the same eye-shadow brush to apply two deep purple eye shadows to the outer two-thirds and crease of your eyelid. Once the purple color is applied to your desired level of intensity, use a fluffy eye-shadow brush to blend the edges of the eye shadow. Step Three: Pat a metallic yellow-gold eye shadow onto the inner third of your eyelid and lower lash line. Step Four: The final step in this look is to apply liquid black liner to your top lash line along with a coat of mascara and false eyelashes. If you’d like to try out a colorful look for the holidays, check out the e.l.f. 100-Piece Eye Shadow Palette at Target. This palette features every eye-shadow shade you could ever need, and it retails for only $15. I think this limited-edition collection of eye shadows would be a fun gift for someone who wants to experiment with colorful looks, and it’s also a perfect choice for teens who are just starting their makeup collection. These eye shadows have a powdery texture that produces a subtle wash of color, so I recommend using a cream eye shadow to make the colors appear more vivid. You can also apply them straight from the palette, but the colors will be more subdued.
Another great gift idea for teens just starting out with makeup is the e.l.f. Luxury Brush Collection. This $20 gift set includes eleven brushes to help you complete your entire makeup look. My favorite brush in the collection is the soft kabuki face brush, which I use to gently sweep bronzer into the contours of my cheeks.
This holiday season, I challenge you to incorporate bold colors into your beauty routine. If you’re not a fan of colorful eye shadow, try rocking bold red lips or rosy pink cheeks. Incorporating color can be scary at first, but it’s such a fun way to change up your look!
