Home Office Tour

After months of house hunting, open houses, and negotiations (oh, and quite a bit of penny pinching), my husband I have finally bought our first home. As always, the process was a lot longer and quite a bit more expensive than we had hoped. We had to stretch our budget a bit to secure the house we wanted, and the required renovations were more costly than we had originally estimated. After emptying our pockets to pay for the home’s closing costs and renovations, we moved in and started daydreaming about how we would decorate each room. Unfortunately, our daydreams are a little bit grander than our budget, so my husband and I have been brainstorming affordable ways to make our home decor dreams a reality.
The first project I tackled was my home office. I had visions of a serene white and gold home office accented with pops of fun color and playful patterns, but the furniture I found online was shockingly expensive and way out of my price range. In addition to being on a limited budget, I’m also seven months pregnant, and I don’t have the most energy. I was looking for a quick, easy, and affordable way to change my office’s decor, so I did what any smart girl would do. I headed to Target! After discovering the Devine Color + Target collection of paints and wallpapers, I got inspired to tackle a few DIY projects to make my office dreams come to life. Keep reading to see how I decorated my office without breaking the bank.
DIY Gold Garment Rack
When I was initially planning the design for my home office, I saw a photo of the most beautiful gold garment rack and knew it had to be part of my office’s decor. Unfortunately, when I finally found it for sale, the cost was way out of my budget. Instead of giving up hope, I headed to Target and picked up a $25 garment rack and two $8 cans of what I now consider to be the best metallic gold spray paint in the world. Thanks to a little bit of ingenuity, I was able to create a near replica of my dream gold garment rack for $45 in less than an hour.
If you’d like to create your own gold garment rack, the first thing you’ll need to find is an affordable garment rack. I chose this because it’s under $25 and comes with an attached shelf. After taking the rack out of its packaging, you’ll want to spread out each piece on cardboard boxes, newspaper, or drop cloths in a well-ventilated area.
Next, you’ll want to purchase two cans of , which is sold exclusively at Target in the home improvement section near the light bulbs. I’ve found that my local Target stores have a varied selection of Devine Color products, so I’d recommend ordering online to ensure you get the exact products you want in one outing. At seven months pregnant, I do anything and everything to save time and energy, so I ordered all of my DIY supplies online at Target and picked them up at my local store about an hour later. Best decision ever!
The best way to get even coverage is to spray a few thin coats of the gold spray paint on the pipes. Thankfully, the clings to the metal without a primer or any prepping, and I found that two thin coats provided fully opaque coverage. Due to the curved shape of the pipes, I recommend using two coats of spray paint on one side, flipping the pipes, and repeating the process on the underside of the pipes. Once both sides are completely dry, I recommend assembling the garment rack and then touching up any areas that were missed before assembly. I know that this process seems time consuming, but it’s so quick and easy. Each coat of the Devine Color + Target spray paint dries in only five minutes, so you’re only looking at a total of around 20-30 minutes for painting.
In less than hour and for less than $50, I was able to create the gold garment rack of my dreams. It fills up the blank wall of my home office perfectly, and it provides the perfect amount of storage for the pieces that I need to photograph each month.
DIY Gold Glitter Full-Length Mirror
In my home office daydreams, I had a glitzy gold mirror next to my gold garment rack. Just as I experienced with my garment rack search, I simply could not find anything even remotely affordable. Maybe I’m cheap, but I just can’t justify spending three or four hundred dollars on one mirror. Since I had such good luck with my gold garment rack, I decided to tackle another DIY project at home.
I found this online at Target, and I selected the, which is a metallic gold paint, to transform this $50 wooden mirror into my dream mirror. Just as I was about to check out, I saw theand got a wild idea. What’s better than a gold mirror? A gold glitter mirror. I added the gold glitter dust to my shopping cart along with a mini paint roller and headed to the store to pick it up.
The beauty of this gold dust is that it mixes easily with Devine Color + Target paint, and you can add more or less glitter to create your desired effect. I wanted a shimmery gold finish, so I simply added a small amount of the gold dust at a time until I achieved the perfect combination of paint and glitter.
I prepped my mirror by placing it on the cardboard boxes I’d previously used to spray paint my garment rack and applied blue painter’s tape to the edges of the mirror to create clean edges after painting. If you’re planning on painting a finished wood item like this mirror, I highly recommend thoroughly sanding it down before painting. If the wood is a dark color, you can also apply a coat of primer to create a lighter and more even finish. This process isn’t mandatory, but it will save you a lot of time and energy in the long run!
Once your mirror is thoroughly prepped, use a mini roller to apply the metallic gold paint and gold dust combo to your mirror in thin and even layers. The paint seemed even and opaque after two coats, but I did three coats for an extra dose of gold glittery goodness. Each coat of paint takes about one hour to dry, so I recommend planning a few other activities you can do in between coats. For example, I assembled and styled my garment rack in between one coat of paint, and then I completed a third DIY project in between the second and third coats of paint.
The shimmering glitter of this mirror is hard to photograph, but it is so, so pretty in person. The edges of the mirror glisten when the sun hits the gold dust, but it’s not too over-the-top with sparkles. It’s my perfect mirror, and I love how it coordinates perfectly with my gold garment rack. This project only used a small amount of paint, so I’m already plotting more projects to use my remaining Devine Color metallic gold paint and gold glitter dust.
DIY White and Gold Spotted Storage Drawers
I decided to give my well-loved white storage drawers a much-needed facelift. While my trusty white drawers were effective at storing my office supplies, they weren’t very pretty to look at. I came dangerously close to throwing them in the dumpster, but thankfully I found the exact inspiration I needed while I was searching for DIY supplies at Target. One $29.99 purchase and about an hour of time helped me transform my boring white storage drawers into a white and gold statement piece!
The star of this project is the. It’s an affordable and easy-to-use removable wallpaper that completely transformed my storage drawers. While it was great for this project, it’s also the perfect way to add a statement wall to your home without the commitment and cost of traditional wallpaper.
As you can see in the photo above, the before and after effect was pretty impressive – especially considering how quick and easy it was to install. Ideally, you would purchase new storage drawers and apply the wallpaper to the outer panel before assembling the drawers, but you can easily complete this project with pre-assembled drawers like mine.
Simply pull out a single drawer, cut a piece of the removable wallpaper from the roll, and remove the paper liner from the wallpaper. Next, you’ll want to slowly apply the sticky side of the wallpaper to the drawer and smooth the wallpaper as you move. You can use a squeegee to smooth out the air bubbles, but I achieved good results simply using my hand.
Once the wallpaper is smoothed over the entire front surface of the drawer, you’ll want to cut away the excess wallpaper from each side and wrap it around each side. Since my drawers have a curved surface on the top of the drawer, I decided to cut the excess wallpaper on the top of the drawers into small, vertical pieces and wrap each piece around the top of the drawer. This procedure created a smooth surface with minimal effort.
It took me less than hour to complete both sets of drawers, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the finished project. For less than $30, and with plenty of removable wallpaper left over for another project, I was able to transform a set of boring drawers that I hated into one gorgeous statement piece that I absolutely love! The beauty of using the removable wallpaper is that if I ever decided to change my office’s color scheme in the future, or if I decide to use the drawers in a different room, I can easily remove the wallpaper and return the drawers to their previous white state.
I loved the effect of the removable wallpaper so much that I ended up using some of the remaining product to line the drawers of my desk. The cute gold spots make even the most mundane office supplies seem fun!
The Finishing Touches
The Devine Color + Target collection is specifically designed to coordinate with the home decor items at Target, so all of my DIY projects coordinated perfectly with the other decor items I’d purchased. I was over-the-moon excited when I saw how this gorgeous white and gold desk from Target matched perfectly with my new gold garment rack, gold glitter mirror, and white and gold spotted storage drawers!
Since I was already on a roll with my Target purchases, I couldn’t help picking up a few new throw pillows to add some pizazz to my home office’s grey love seat. These tasseled pillows are as cute as can be, and they’re each under $20.
While most people use clothing racks or mirrors as functional items, I use my fancy new DIY projects as statement pieces in my home office. I filled up my DIY metallic gold garment rack with a few summer fashion purchases. I may have gone into Target looking for DIY home improvement supplies, but I came out with a cartful of stuff…as usual. Some of my favorite purchases were a package of white Huggable Hangers, and these adorable chambray espadrilles and nude lace-up heels.
My new DIY white and gold spotted storage drawers are one of my favorite parts of the office. Inside the drawers, I store office supplies and photography equipment, and I use the tops of the drawers as a space to store beauty and fashion products I’ll be featuring in my work. To add a bit of personality, I added fresh pink peonies in my favorite gold vase, a hammered gold tray to display my jewelry, and the cutest rose gold pineapple jewelry dish on top of a few great books. Of course, all three of these adorable pieces are from Target, and they match my Devine Color + Target DIY projects perfectly.
And of course I had to accessorize my desk. In my previous office, I made the mistake of cluttering my desktop with too many things. It looked cute, but I barely had any room to spread out my work each day. In my new house, I decided to keep my desk slightly more minimal. I still added a few decorative touches with my favorite white pineapple jars, gold picture frames, and ginger jar lamp, but I kept the majority of the desktop clear for work. Thankfully, the touch of gold and white spotted wallpaper on the inside of my desk drawers gives my desk an extra dose of fun!
After finishing my desk decor, I added white storage drawers to the corner beside my desk and labeled each drawer with gold-and-white decorative labels from Target. As I expected, my DIY home decor projects featuring Devine Color + Target paint and removable wallpaper coordinated perfectly with these affordable labels. I added a white carousel pencil cup to store my office supplies, a wooden angel figurine that used to belong to my mother, and a gold and linen memory board from the Pillowfort line at Target.
I couldn’t be happier with how my new home office decor is coming along. I still have a few more ideas up my sleeve to make the room even more fun and more functional, and I will be sure to update you every step of the way.
