There are so many things I love about Florida summers. I love the constant sunshine, the gorgeous days outdoors, the picnics, the beach days – I could go on and on! But as much as I love the summers, I hate, hate, hate the bug bites. This summer, I’m helping my family take advantage of every single minute of the summer days and nights with the help of. It keeps us protected from pesky mosquitoes, so that we can have fun outdoors without worrying. In this post, I’m sharing five easy and fun outdoor summer activities that are perfect for families with younger children!
5 Fun Outdoor Summer Activities for Kids
1. Nature Scavenger Hunt
My daughters love collecting sticks, leaves, and flowers outdoors, so we like to turn their little hobby into a fun game. My husband and I will give each girl something to look for – a pink flower, the biggest stick in the garden, five acorns, anything and everything they have access to. Both girls LOVE the challenge, and it’s also a great way to teach colors, counting, textures, and more. Younger children can go on a nature scavenger hunt with their parents, and older kids can venture out on their own. It keeps their bodies and brains moving in the sunshine!
2. Outdoor Obstacle Course
When my daughter needs to get some energy out, we like to set up a mini obstacle course for her outside. She loves the little challenges we set up (mini scooter race, “don’t touch the lava” rock course, hopscotch, etc), and we love that she gets a dose of exercise and fun outdoors.
There’s no need to go out and buy fancy equipment. Get creative and use what’s inside your house!
Extra cardboard boxes can be fantastic obstacles to jump over. A quick drawing with sidewalk chalk can create a twisty path, and the toys and balls you already own can create fun challenges. Our kids love setting up the obstacle course just as much as they love acting it out, so it’s a great way for the entire family to get creative.
3. Family Picnic
Gorgeous summer days always call for picnics! We love packing up our favorite foods, drinks, and activities and heading out to our yard, the park, or even the beach to enjoy a family meal outdoors. Plus, it’s so fun for kids to be able to immediately run around and play after the meal.
4. Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest
Let’s just say my daughters inherited the competitive gene from both of their parents. Needless to say, our entire family LOVES a good and friendly competition! It’s fun to host a sidewalk chalk art festival in your front yard! Simply give each person a square or two of sidewalk, a small selection of sidewalk chalk, and let everyone have fun drawing away. Everyone gets to vote on the winner, and everyone gets to have fun drawing too. We love having a fun snack while we’re drawing to make things extra special.
5. Bubble Party
Bubbles are cheap and SO much fun for kids of all ages! Load up on bubbles, bubble wands, bubble machines – you name it, and let you kids have the best time playing with bubbles in the sunshine! There are so many ways to switch things up too. Have a contest to see who can blow the biggest bubble with a bubble wand or who see who can pop the most bubbles in a minute. Kids and adults alike are guaranteed to smile during this activity!
#1 Essential for Outdoor Summer Activities with Kids
No matter what outdoor activity we choose to do, we NEVER leave the house without insect repellent in the summer months. Mosquitoes are everywhere in Florida during the summer.
That’s why I always keep a bottle of from in our home, both of our cars, and my on-the-go tote during the summer months. There’s nothing worse than ending a summer evening early because you can feel yourself getting bit by mosquitoes, so we always apply a quick coat of OFF! Family Care Clean Feel on ourselves and our children before we’re headed outdoors. It doesn’t have the greasy feel of the old school repellents you probably used as a child, so your family will be protected and comfortable no matter what activity you choose.
If you’re in the market for a new insect repellent for your family, head to your local Publix’s home cleaning aisle and pick up a bottle of. It’s formulated with picaridin and provides protection from mosquitoes. We love the non-greasy feel, and I recently learned that OFF! Family Care Clean Feel insect repellent also works well on the outer surfaces of your clothing too. The spray bottle makes it easy to apply to your skin or clothing, and it won’t damage cotton, wool, or nylon clothing.
If you’re in the market for a great insect repellent, head to Publix and pick up a bottle of. It’s a summer must have in our family!
