Easy Mermaid Curls Tutorial

This morning I checked the weather on my phone and had to do a double-take when I saw that the high for the day was 92 degrees. It’s only April, and it’s already in the 90s! In Florida, high temperatures also bring high levels humidity, which means my hair transforms into a giant, unruly ball of frizz if I spend more than a few minutes outside. After years of trial and error, I’ve learned that my hair will only behave itself in the heat if it’s curled. When I try to straighten my hair on a hot and humid day, my freshly straightened hair will crimp and frizz within half an hour. It’s just not worth the time or the effort, so I stick to relaxed curls when I’m headed to an event. Unfortunately, that means that my hair always looks exactly the same.
This week, I tried to experiment with different styles of curls, and I re-discovered an old method that I learned from my hairdresser in Los Angeles. Unlike my normal curling routine, this method doesn’t use the clamp on the curling iron, which produces curls with a slightly different shape. Over the past few days, I’ve perfected my technique and found the ideal set of products to create long-lasting, shiny, and voluminous mermaid curls that are the perfect hairstyle for spring and summer!
After washing and drying your hair, apply a generous coat of TRESemmé® Two Extra Hold Aerosol Hair Spray. This step gives your hair the perfect amount of grip that helps to hold your curls in place. During the fall and winter, I normally only apply hairspray after curling my hair – if at all; however, during the warmer months, sandwiching my curls between two layers of hairspray provides maximum hold! After you’ve thoroughly spritzed the hairspray over your locks, run through your hair with a hairbrush to ensure that it’s perfectly smooth and separated.
I created my curls with a 1″ curling iron, but you can also use a curling wand and get the same results.
1-3. Wrap a small section of hair around your curling iron or wand (do not use the clip) away from your face and hold it in place for a few seconds. 4-5. Slide the curl down the curling iron or wand and allow it to cool in your hand for a few seconds in the curled position. 6. Release the curl and repeat until all of your hair is curled.
After your curls are finished, apply a generous amount of TRESemmé® Two Extra Hold Aerosol Hair Spray to your hair. This hairspray will help to extend the life of your curls without making your hair too crunchy or stiff.
At this point, your curls will be tight, so you’ll need to loosen them to achieve your desired look. I like to run my fingers through my curls to split them up and add a bit of volume. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your tight curls transform into perfect mermaid curls!
The finished curls are shiny, bouncy, and voluminous! In my opinion, this hairstyle is the epitome of summer style, and it’s appropriate for casual or fancy events. If you want your curls to be even looser waves, simply run a wide-tooth comb through your hair to achieve a more relaxed look.
When I follow this procedure with my hair, my curls stay in place for at least two days; however, this time period will differ based on your hair type, local climate, and activity level. If you want to create an easy second-day hairstyle with your curls, try twisting the front pieces of your hair and pinning them at the crown of your head for an easy half-up look!
