How to Have More Good Hair Days
I’m the girl who wants to have a good hair day every day but also doesn’t want to spend more than five or ten minutes styling her hair. I won’t pretend that my hair looks good every single day. I mean what girl doesn’t have a fair amount of messy bun days? With that being said, when I stick to my hair routine, I can easily get four good hair days in each week with minimal effort. The secret isn’t spending more time on styling your hair. Instead, it’s all about strategically choosing products, tools, and hair styles that will keep your hair looking fabulous in between washes.
If you’re curious about how to have more good hair days, today’s post is for you! I’m sharing five easy tips to help you have a good hair day every day, and they don’t require you to spend hours styling your hair each day.
How to Make Your Hair Style Last Longer
1. Use the right products.
As I mentioned earlier, I have quite a few hair products in my beauty collection – partly because I love trying new products but mainly because I use different products to achieve different results. You guys know I love slathering my hair in thick hair masks and heavy hair oils, but these products are not what you want to use to maximize the longevity of your hair style – especially in the warmer months. When my goal is to increase the amount of time I can go between washes, I like to use clarifying and volumizing hair products infused with just the right amount of moisturizing ingredients. I also use a minimal amount of styling products to reduce buildup and keep my scalp as clean as possible.
Pantene Charcoal Collection Shampoo and Conditioner
It can be tricky to find a shampoo and conditioner duo that clarifies and volumizes without drying out your hair, but I recently found a new collection from Pantene that has changed the game. Pantene’s Charcoal Collection improves your hair’s health from the inside out by removing build up and impurities (from scalp oils, dirt, and styling products) and adding antioxidants to your hair with activated charcoal. The activated charcoal attracts impurities like a magnet, so after using this power duo, your hair will feel lighter, look more voluminous, and have a beautiful shine. Ladies, I’m being 100% honest with you when I say I was blown away the first time I used these products. Everything from the packaging to the texture of the products feels high-end to me, and the scent is absolutely addictive. It smells like a spa scent mixed with something sweet. I’d totally buy a bottle of perfume if Pantene ever decided to bottle this scent!
Pantene’s Charcoal Collection Shampoo uses activated charcoal to cleanse your hair and scalp, remove impurities, and balance your scalp to leave your hair refreshed and shiny. It includes a Pro-V blend of activated charcoal, pro-vitamin B5, and antioxidants plus I love that it’s free of silicone, parabens, and dyes. I am so impressed with this shampoo. It has a super-thick lather and somehow manages to remove buildup and grease without stripping my hair of its natural moisture. It instantly makes my hair feel light and refreshed without feeling dried out. If you’re looking for a clarifying shampoo that’s not too intense to use several times a week, this shampoo is going to be your new favorite.

Pantene’s Charcoal Collection Conditioner is Pantene’s first-ever silicone-free conditioner, and it is awesome. While it has a lightweight texture, it’s still packed with nutrients (including pro-vitamin B5 and white charcoal) to moisturize your hair. I love that it rinses out quickly and easily, so my hair is never weighed down or greasy. Despite its light consistency, it still leaves my hair feeling soft and looking smooth and shiny. Every time I’ve used this shampoo and conditioner duo, my hair has looked and felt clean and refreshed in between washes with renewed body and shine – even after chasing around a baby all day long!
If you’re looking for an affordable shampoo and conditioner duo that will leave your hair soft, shiny, and refreshed without being weighed down, you’re going to fall in love with the Pantene Charcoal Collection. Both products are already extremely affordable and will be available to purchase from Target in mid-July!

2. Strategically plan your hair styling schedule.
Over the years, I’ve learned that having a good hair day isn’t only about the condition of your hair. It also has a lot to do with choosing the correct style for the day. When you strategically plan the order of your hair styles, you can elongate the time you can go in between washes.
Here’s what works for me. On hair washing days, I’ll blow-dry my hair and lightly style it by running a straightener or curling iron through the ends of my hair and a few of the pieces in the front. On the second day, my hair usually isn’t greasy at all, so I’ll just add a few extra curls to add body and texture. On day three, I’ll usually start getting excess oil and reduced volume, so I’ll opt for a more styled look. Half up-dos, braids, and twists are all great options. If I make it to day four, my hair is usually looking fairly limp with greasy roots. That’s when I strategically break out hair styles that can camouflage my hair’s condition. My go-to styles for these days are sleek ponytails, buns, and braids boosted with hair extensions.
Everyone’s hair and hair preferences are going to be different, so you’ll have to test things out on your hair to see what works best for your hair and daily routine. The key is really to choose the right progression of hair styles – moving from least styled to most styled. If you’re layering on products and twisting your hair into an intricate braid on day one, you’re gonna have dirty and funky-looking hair the next day; however, light waves, curls, or straightened hair can easily transition into a more intricate style. In general, try to move from styles that require the least amount of products and styling to the styles that require the most products and styling. This technique will help you maintain volume, reduce grease, and camouflage natural oils and buildup throughout the week.
3. Use the correct hair tools.
We’ve already discussed why it’s important to prep your hair with the right hair products, but good hair days are also extremely reliant on using the correct hair tools. While you definitely don’t need to spend a fortune on heat tools, I would make sure the devices you purchase have a few basic features that will ensure your hair won’t be damaged.
I always like to start with an ionic hair dryer with multiple heat settings. Too much heat on your hair is always a bad idea, so stay away from blowdryers that fry your hair with intense heat. When it comes to other heat tools, look for straighteners and curling irons with tourmaline and ceramic plates or barrels. This smooth surface will reduce damage to your hair. Another key feature to look for is multiple heat options. As I mentioned with blow-dryers, using too high of a heat setting on your hair can leave your hair dry, damaged, and frizzy. I like to start on a low to mid-level heat and gradually increase until the tool styles my hair as desired. Once you find your sweet spot for temperatures, try not to raise the tool’s temperature above that number.
The right heat tools can transform your hair and lengthen your style if used properly, so it’s worth the time and effort to find a few options that work for you and your hair.
4. Embrace the weather.
Listen, I love a good humidity-resistant hairspray, and I’ll always enjoy a frizz-fighting hair mask. But honestly, there isn’t a hair lotion or potion in the world that will save your hair if you have to walk through the rain on a summer afternoon. Sometimes, the weather is going to win, and that’s ok! Instead of fighting your area’s local weather conditions, embrace them and choose products, tools, and hair styles that will survive – if not benefit – from the day’s weather forecast.
Here in Florida, most days are hot and humid. I used to fight against my natural habitat by attempting to keep my hair stick straight on rainy summer days, and let’s just say I wasted a lot of time with my efforts. Now I find ways to help my hair work with the weather. My particular hair texture tends to get wavy when it’s wet, so I always choose styles that will benefit from extra movement and texture. Instead of choosing ultra-sleek and straight styles, I’ll opt for natural waves or loose curls on a muggy summer day. If I know there’s a chance of rain, I’ll throw my hair into a boho braid or bun and try to cover it up with a sweater when I’m running errands.
Whether you’re dealing with dry, windy, hot, or rainy conditions where you live, think about the styles that have performed best for you in each season. Add those hair styles to your weekly routine, and you’re guaranteed to have more good hair days!
5. Establish a routine.
Practice makes perfect. When you establish a consistent hair routine, you’ll start to see your good hair days multiply for a variety of a reasons. First of all, consistent use of great products will keep your hair healthy and strong, so it will look and feel better right from the start. Secondly, when you practice your hair styles week after week, even the most intricate styles become a piece of cake. When I first started curling my hair, it would take me over an hour, and I still didn’t like the results. Now I can curl my nearly waist-length hair in less than 10 minutes as I’m watching my baby in the morning. Plus, I’ve learned easy ways to touch-up my hair on the second, third, and fourth day between washes that only take a few minutes but pack big results.
When you find the right products and hair styles for your hair, I guarantee you’re going to find yourself having more good hair days than ever!
