Natural Makeup Starter Kit + Back to School Gift Idea

Even though I’m no longer a student, the back to school season is still one of my favorite times of the year because it feels like a start. It’s a chance to refocus on your goals, reorganize your life, and revamp your daily routine. No matter what your role is this back to school season (student, professional, mom), I bet you’re looking for makeup that’s easy to use and affordable to buy that makes you feel healthy and pretty. Here are the products I recommend for any busy gal to include in her natural makeup starter kit. To create a gorgeous gift for the high school or college student in your life (or honestly anyone looking for a makeup kit), simply place a few of these items in an acrylic makeup organizer along with a few brushes, and you are guaranteed to have a winning gift!

Natural Makeup Starter Kit 

Foundation or BB Cream: Foundation helps to even out your skin tone and camouflage any blemishes you may have. The Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows Liquid Foundation evens and smoothes your complexion with a moisturizing formula that leaves a natural-looking finish. The formula is compromised of 99.8% natural minerals and available in 16 shades. I’m wearing the shade 1015 Buff in today’s post, and I’d probably go up one shade the next time I purchase this foundation. It’s easy to apply (I prefer to use a makeup sponge) and gives you gorgeous coverage that doesn’t look cake-y or unnatural. I also LOVE that Burt’s Bees products don’t contain parabens, SLS, phthalates, synthentic fragrances, or petrolatum, and it’s amazing that their makeup is also cruelty-free (never tested on animals) and dermatologist-tested!  

Concealer: Any busy lady NEEDS concealer in her life. It’s the easiest way to brighten up your undereyes and fake a wide-awake look. When you’re shopping for undereye concealer, be sure to select a shade that’s one to two shades lighter than your foundation to achieve a brightened appearance. If you’re looking for a concealer to use on your face/blemishes, select a shade that matches your foundation. 

Powder Foundation: While you can technically wear either liquid or powder foundation on its own, I like to layer them because I prefer the extra coverage, extra staying powder, and of course, the oil control provided by the powder; however, if you’re looking for a natural look, you can definitely try only wearing one of the products at a time!

For today’s look, I used a large fluffy brush to apply Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Mattifying Powder Foundation (wearing shade 1110 Vanilla) over my Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows Liquid Foundation. If you want to use this powder on its own and get more coverage, you can use the sponge that’s included in the compact. This 100% natural and non-comedogenic powder helps to control your skin’s oil production throughout the day, and I’ve been really impressed with the longevity of the matte finish in the extremely hot and humid Florida weather. This powder is available in six shades, and I can’t wait for them to add even more shades to the line. 

Bronzer: After you’ve cancelled out redness and discoloration with your foundation, concealer, and/or powder foundation, you’re going to need to add some dimension, life, and color back to your face. I like to use a fluffy brush to sweep bronzer underneath my cheekbones, along my hairline and jawline, and down the sides of my nose to sculpt my face and give a sunkissed glow. 

Blush: I didn’t use blush for years, and I now realize what a huge mistake that was! Blush gives your cheeks a natural flush, so you instantly look healthier and more awake. It’s a step that only adds an extra 3 seconds to your makeup routine, and it packs a huge punch. I am a HUGE fan of the Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Blush with Vitamin E because it has a formula that applies a sheer wash of even color to your cheeks and blends very easily. The three colors in the line are all so flattering, and I love the 100% natural and talc-free formula. I’m wearing Bare Peach in today’s post, and I will absolutely be headed back to Walmart.com to pick up the other two shades!


Lip Balm: Everyone knows that Burt’s Bees lip balm is incredible, and I can’t even tell you how many tubes I’ve purchased throughout the years. I can’t wait to grab another tube of Pumpkin Spice this year! If you want an ultra-natural makeup look, just swipe a little bit of lip balm over your lips to keep them moisturized throughout the day.

Lipstick:  If you’re looking to add a little bit of color to your complexion, the easiest way to do so is with a fun lipstick. If you’re new to makeup, lipstick can be a bit intimidating. I promise you that you will absolutely feel comfortable wearing color as soon as you see a photo of yourself wearing lipstick. I was shocked at how much healthier I looked when I didn’t try to camouflage the color of my lips! One of my go-to everyday lipsticks are the Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Moisturizing Lipsticks. I’ve been using them for years, and I just think that the 18 satin colors and six glossy colors available are all so beautiful, flattering, and easy to wear. Plus, it features 100% natural ingredients to moisturize your lips and provide a smooth finish. 

Lip Gloss: If you prefer a sheer lip color or just want to add shine to your lipstick, the Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Moisturizing Tinted Lip Oil are great. I’ve been using the lip oils for over a year, and I’ve bought several of the shades as gifts too. They feature a 100% natural formula and include meadowfoam and coconut oils to moisturize your lips. They provide a sheer wash of color, so I think all of the shades would be flattering on any skin tone.


Eyeshadow: The Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Eye Shadow Palettes make creating an eye look in the morning so quick and easy. I’m wearing the Dusky Woods palette in today’s post, and I love all three shades. This color combo really makes your eyes pop even on way-to-early mornings. The 100% natural mineral formula blends easily and doesn’t crease or smudge throughout the day. and it’s safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens-wearers. This product is available in four color combinations, and I honestly think they’d all work for any skin tone. 

Eye Brow Pencil: I was so excited to find the Burt’s Bees Brow Pencil (wearing the shade Blonde in today’s post) because it has a 99.9% natural formula plus a responsibly-sourced cedar wood pencil. I was a little bit worried about the soft formulation when I first bought the pencil, but it actually makes filling in, defining, and shaping your eyebrows quick and easy. Just be sure to use short and light strokes and use the attached brush to blend the line you create. This pencil is available in two shades, and I can’t wait to see them add more colors to the collection. I’ve loved using this brow pencil!

Mascara: While you definitely don’t need to use all of the makeup products mentioned in today’s post, mascara is something that makes a HUGE difference. A few coats of mascara can transform your look and make your eyes pop like nothing else! If you want to create a more natural appearance with your mascara, try wiping the extra product off of the mascara wand with a tissue or paper towel before applying to your lashes.
