How to Grow Long, Strong, and Healthy Hair + Free Sample of Nexxus Youth Renewal!

A few years ago I had a completely horrifying experience at a hair salon. I walked in with nearly waist length natural blonde hair with subtle highlights and walked out with FRIED shoulder length taupe (yes, I said taupe) hair with choppy layers. I try to be a low maintenance girl who’s easy going about her appearance, but I was a full-on drama queen when I looked in the mirror. I cried and cried and probably drove my friends and family crazy whining about my hair.

A few days later, I got my hair color corrected and cut into some sort of a style. My hair didn’t look good, but I was just happy that it wasn’t taupe. At this point, my hair had been colored four times in a week, and my hair and scalp were destroyed. I could barely brush my hair without cringing, and I gasped every time I’d put my hair in a ponytail and felt hair breaking off. Needless to say, it was a sad situation. 

My hair is finally back to normal. Let’s ignore the fact that this picture is from Christmas. My hair looks pretty good, so we’re gonna roll with it 🙂

Fast forward to three years later, and my hair is finally back to normal. I have sworn to never take any risks with my hair ever again, and I have gotten serious about my hair care routine. Even though I’ve drastically reduced the damage in my hair, I want to protect my new healthy hair and prevent signs of aging in my hair. If you’re thinking…aging hair, huh?…don’t worry, I was the same way! My mom and grandmothers have warned me for years that as you age, your hair has volume loss, breakage, roughness, less shine, dryness, brittleness, unruliness, and loss of color vibrancy  As with aging skin, it’s never too early to start fighting the signs of aging in your hair- especially because anti-aging hair care products are also the exact same products you’d use for brittle, dry, and damaged hair!

If you’re fighting dry/damaged hair, aging hair, or you’re just hoping to grow your hair out, I highly suggest following these tips!

Take care of your body.
Your hair won’t stand a chance at becoming healthy and strong if you aren’t taking care of yourself. In addition to eating a healthy diet and drinking as much water as possible, I’d highly recommend investing in Biotin and Omega-3 supplements (always check with your doctor first!). You can ask your doctor or pharmacist for what type of dosage you should take, but I’ve found great improvements in my skin, nails, and hair by adding these supplements to my daily routine.

Use a heat protectant and use as little heat as possible. 
I bet that you always apply sunscreen to your face and body before a day at the beach, but do you apply a heat protectant to your hair before using a 450 degree curling iron? Heat causes great damage to your hair, so be sure to use a heat protectant before any heat styling (blow drying, straightening, curling) or when you’ll be out in the heat all day long. If possible, try to avoid heat styling your hair on a daily basis. 

Don’t wash your hair everyday.
I know this idea might seem gross to some people, but you really don’t want to be stripping away your hair’s natural oils on a daily basis. I try to wash my hair around 3 times a week. Avoid using oily products near your scalp, and use dry shampoo to eliminate additional oil.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
Your hair likes moisture- plain and simple. In addition to using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, deep condition at least once a week and apply a leave-in conditioner or a moisturizing serum or argan oil to the ends to make your ends appear healthier.

Use products with good ingredients.
Just like your body needs nutritious food to flourish, your hair will respond when you apply products with nourishing ingredients. Look for products with moisturizing and strengthening ingredients such as Keratin, Argan Oil, CoQ10, and Wheat Protein. Recently, I’ve discovered an incredible range of hair products that features all of these ingredients plus more, and it’s affordable, makes my hair feel like silk,  and smells like expensive perfume…basically everything that’s on my wish list!
