Beach Waves 101
In addition to making me feel like a mermaid/beach goddess, beach waves also happen to be a rockstar in the summer heat. In fact, I’d dare to say that my waves look progressively better throughout the day as the wind blows through my hair and my waves start to separate.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy summer hairstyle idea, check out my easy beach waves tutorial for long-lasting beach waves.
Easy Beach Waves Tutorial

Step One:
After washing and conditioning my hair, I allow it to air dry. Once my hair is about 80% dry, I spray a heat protectant spray along the lengths of my hair to reduce heat damage from my blow dryer and curling iron. The spray works like a charm for this step. It smells like candy and adds the perfect amount of shine and slip to my hair in addition to adding a layer of heat protection.
Step Two:
As I blow-dry my hair, I use my hand to scrunch small sections of my hair into waves. This technique activates the natural curl in my hair and ultimately makes my beach wave style last longer. If your hair is naturally stick-straight, this step is optional. I repeat this process until my hair is completely dry.
Step Three:
Once my hair is completely dry, I use a 1.5” curling iron to loosely curl 2” sections of my hair. To create a beachy effect, I leave the last 2-3” of my hair uncurled.
Step Four:
After finishing my curls, I use a salt spray to add texture and body. I spray the along the roots of my hair and use my hands to push my hair up to add volume. This spray gives my hair the perfect amount of grip, so it’s easy to build up natural volume in seconds. Then I spray the product along the lengths of my hair, scrunch small sections of my hair into waves, and break up my curls. The BTZ is a great choice for this step because it provides texture and body without leaving behind a sticky residue.
Step Five:
When I’ve perfected my beach waves, I lock in the style with a light-hold hairspray lengthens the life of my waves without making my hair sticky or crunchy.
This five-step process takes less than 10 minutes to complete, and I’ve found that I can make my beach waves last for two to three days by refreshing my waves with an extra spritz of sea salt spray and hair spray each morning. While the technique is somewhat important, the true secret to long-lasting waves is the proper arsenal of hair products. You want to avoid using any products that weigh down your hair or leave behind a sticky or crunchy residue. Heavy hair products will make your waves fall in a few hours, and it’s impossible to achieve an effortless beachy look when your hair looks deep-fried and crispy.
These three products from each have an ultra-lightweight finish, so your hair won’t look or feel like it’s loaded up with products. I think they’re just as good as products I’ve purchased at a salon, and the price tag is much easier on my wallet.
