2014 New Year’s Resolutions: Say Yes, Do More, and Be Better
Usually on New Year’s Day I find myself quoting Death Cab for Cutie lyrics – “So this is the new year, and I don’t feel any different,” but this year is different.
2013 was filled with extreme joy and moments of profound sorrow. I knew that 2013 would be life-changing when I experienced the incredible loss of my grandmother at the beginning of the year. She was the matriarch of our family and one of my greatest friends and life influences. Without her guidance, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. When she was released from the pain she experienced on this earth, I knew that I needed to follow in her footsteps and live life to the fullest: enjoy each and every moment with my family and friends, strengthen my trust in God, try to make a positive influence in others’ lives, be a good wife/daughter/sister/friend, and go after my dreams.
While I wasn’t expecting to lose my grandmother so soon, I had a feeling that 2013 would be a year of major transitions. I dubbed 2013 the “Year of Yes” and vowed to say yes to the things that mattered- and I did. I traveled with my family and friends, accomplished a few of my professional goals, and tried to make the most of every moment. I didn’t accomplish everything that I wanted to, but the events of the year helped me gain a clearer vision of my hopes and dreams and the confidence to go after them. 2014 is going to be another year of yes for me, but instead of saying yes to more fun things, I’ll be saying yes to the scary things- career opportunities, life changes, and big moves.
I have so many personal, professional, and just-for-fun resolutions and goals that I’d like to accomplish in 2014 (read my 101 in 1001 post if you’re interested!), but the theme of this year’s resolutions is to Say Yes, Do More, and Be Better.
Say Yes
I’m going to live by Tina Fey’s wise words: “Say yes, and you’ll figure it out afterward.” There are so many things that I’m hoping to accomplish in the next few years in my personal and professional life, and I honestly just don’t have the time to make excuses anymore. I’m going to prepare for every challenge as much as I can, do my very best, and trust that if the opportunity is meant to be, it will work itself out. While I’m sure my nerves will get the best of me at times, I’m going to try to focus on the end goal and worry less about what others’ will think if I fail. Like I mentioned in a previous post, there’s always a possibility that you’ll fail, but there’s an equal probability that you’ll succeed! I’m confident that every failure will help my fine tune my path, and every success will take me one step closer to accomplishing my dreams.
Do More:
I have a bad habit of putting things off until the last minute. I’m a serial procrastinator, and 2014 will be the end of that bad habit. I’ll be making it a priority to start and finish tasks as soon as possible. I know that I won’t want to get started at times, but the initial discomfort definitely beats the overwhelming anxiety I feel when I have 500 things on my to-do list. I don’t want to eliminate necessary relaxation time, but I want to waste less time and spend more time doing the things that matter.
Be Better:
As always, I want to become a better person than I was in the previous year in all areas of my life. I want to become a better wife, daughter, sister, and friend, and I am going to make a great effort to try harder and better in all areas of my life. Whether it’s keeping my apartment tidier, spending a less on groceries, calling my family more, or writing more thank you cards, I want to constantly strive to be the best that I can in every part of my life.
I’ll be checking in throughout the year with updates on my resolutions as well as my 101 in 1001 post. I’d really love to interact more with my readers this year, so say hi on any of my social media channels! I love making new friends.
